Retinoid Drugs for Acne: Tretinoin

There are so many products claiming to cure acne that it is difficult to know which one to choose. When skin cleansers and over the counter treatments don’t work, a doctor may prescribe tretinoin.

Removes Dead Skin

Tretinoin belongs to the type of drugs called retinoids, which are derived from vitamin A. It is the most popular treatment for comedonal acne that is white heads and blackheads.

Tretinoin is an exfolliant and removes the dead skin cells, thus opening up the blocked pores. It also helps to prevent new comedones from forming.

Reduces Wrinkles

This active ingredient has been found to reduce wrinkles, as it removes the dead skin cells on the top layer of the skin and reveals the new skin beneath. It can also be used to reduce acne scars.

Tretinoin is available in the form of liquid, cream and gel. Wash and dry the affected skin first. Apply a small amount of medication on the area before bedtime.

Dries the Skin

Wash your face in the morning with a rough washcloth to get rid of the dead skin cells.  As tretinoin is known to cause drying of the skin, use a good moisturizer.

Avoid too much exposure to the sun, since treatment with tretinoin makes you prone to sunburn. Your skin will also be more sensitive, therefore avoid waxing or shaving the treated area.

Temporary Flare-Ups

Tretinoin often causes the acne to get worse soon after beginning treatment.  Red, peeling and dry skin is commonly seen. However, if you persist with the treatment, you should see a lot of improvement after three months.

Sometimes tretinoin can cause excessive burning and irritation, especially in people who are sensitive to it. It should never be combined with benzoyl peroxide.

Tretinoin should not be used by women who are pregnant or who are planning a pregnancy.
