Topical Combination Products for Acne

Topical acne treatments contain active ingredients that act on various aspects of the disease. These applications usually have an anti-inflammatory effect and have anti-bacterial properties as well. Topical combination products have many advantages.

Drug Resistance

When a drug is used on its own, the body tends to develop a resistance to it. In the case of topical drugs for acne, this means the bacteria targeted by the antibiotic could develop a resistance to the drug.

They therefore continue to grow despite the continued use of the formulation. This is a common problem with acne medication because it needs to be used long-term for the patient to experience relief.

This is where topical combination products can come to the rescue. Another advantage is that when using a combination product, patients need to use less of it than when using a product with a single antibiotic.

Which Drugs?

Acne drugs used in combination with other drugs include topical benzoyl peroxide and tazarotene.

Benzoyl peroxide is the most commonly used drug for acne treatment. It works best on mild to moderate acne. This topical application is basically an ant-bacterial formulation. Tazarotene is a topical retinoid that reduces blackheads and reduces inflammation.

Types of Combinations

Both benzoyl peroxide and tazarotene are very effective when used in combination with other topical applications. Both these drugs are used in combination with erythromycin to treat acne.

When retinoids are used in combination, they should be applied only before bedtime after the skin has been cleansed.

Over The Counter Drugs

If you’re using benzoyl peroxide in combination, apply only a thin film to the skin. This can be applied once or twice a day after the skin is cleansed and thoroughly dried.

Topical combination products containing benzoyl peroxide and clindamycin are also available over the counter.
